Principal's Welcome

Dear Parents and Students,
It is with pleasure that I welcome you to a new school year at Forest Grove High School! I am looking forward to a great year, and I encourage every student to take full advantage of the numerous academic, vocational, athletic and extra-curricular opportunities that are available to each of you.
Every year high school graduates face higher and higher expectations as they transition to future vocational or academic endeavors. For instance, starting with the class of 2007, the Oregon University System will no longer accept grades lower than a C in required high school course work that is necessary for college acceptance. Higher grades and higher SAT scores seem to be the norm for most colleges and universities as completion for college admissions intensifies. Employers are also increasing expectations for potential employees as the world moves toward a digital society and a global economy. The state has increased graduation requirements in that a third year of math is now required for all students in the class of 2010 and for those classes that follow. Higher expectations have been created for the class of 2012 and 2014. As a result, our school system must change to better prepare our students for these higher demands.
Many school improvements have been made that are designed to provide greater support to our students to meet these higher demands. We continue to offer an Advisory Program, a LINKS Program, Math and Reading Workshop support classes, interdisciplinary core teams at the ninth and tenth grade levels, and continued development and refinement of Academies at the eleventh and twelfth grade levels.
Student planners are provided to all students and are designed to support student achievement and enhance school-to-home communication. Students are encouraged to use their planner every day to write down homework assignments, class projects and important due dates. Parents are encouraged to frequently review this planner and offer necessary assistance and support at home to help ensure your student’s academic progress.
School wide implementation of web based software provides parents and students on-line access to individual updates regarding grades, attendance and upcoming assignments. Parents will receive an activation code for their individual student at Back to School Night.
We have a great staff at FGHS and working together with parents and students, we look forward to the new challenges and expectations the future brings!
Sincerely,
Karen Robinson
